Prepare to Volunteer Overseas

What is expected of a volunteer overseas

An international volunteer overseas is expected to have the Right Heart = Jai in Thai.

Characters and feelings are expressed in Thai in "heart words".  Jai dee = good heart: very important.  Dee jai means happy!  Jai yen = cool heart, patient: equally important.  Kraeng jai = considerate, not imposing your feelings, ideas or problems on other people unasked.

An International Volunteer Overseas should be prepared to do Volunteer Work in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Nepal, elsewhere!

Important to bring your Special Skills as well as a Cross Cultural Understanding!

A volunteer overseas is expected to have the skills to perform the tasks agreed upon.  An overseas volunteer is also expected to have learned about and to respect and adapt to local customs, culture and values avoiding the "this is how we do it back home" attitude.

A volunteer overseas is expected to come as a volunteer, to be flexible, not to come as a tourist, expecting the services tourists pay extra for.

A volunteer overseas is expected to be ready to help, to get involved with the tasks asked for by local colleagues.
